COPPELIA is one of my favourite ballets and I never get tired of seeing it performed.
It is the story of a flirtatious youth, Franz, who is captivated with a beautiful doll, Copppelia, which he mistakes for a living girl.
She is the creation of eccentric toymaker Dr Coppelius played by Roman Shuparsky and she infuriates Franz’s feisty fiancee, Swanhilda. When she sneaks into the toymaker’s workshop to confront Coppelia, she is in for a great surprise.
No two ballet companies tell the story in exactly the same way but the choreography and the music by Leo Delibes are the dominating factor and the Moscow Ballet – Le Classique company gave a brilliant display of dancing. Excellent dancing from the Corps de Ballet and the soloists made this an evening to remember.
