ROLLING back in style. From 1972 to '78 Les McKeown was lead singer of the tartan trousered boy band from Edinburgh, the Bay City Rollers who, for a while, especially among teenage girls, were the biggest British worldwide musical sensation since the Beatles.
Now with his own band, he was in Christchurch performing the old hits, sporting the Top Of The Pops tartan, while relating the Rollers' story. Clearly in his element with the mainly female audience, he's still particularly proud of appearing on the cover of teen mags Jackie and Look In. Perhaps few there were likely to have seen him in his heyday, but all seemed to know the words, and were out to enjoy themselves with scarves up aloft and the dancers up front right from the start.
A mixture of love songs and Pop Rock, the Rollers' hits are certainly catchy singalongs, numbers like Summer Love, Sensation, Shang A Lang, and their most popular, Bye Bye Baby, along with their version of Dusty Springfield's feelgood I Only Want To Be With You. He also paid tribute to his own early influences including the Dave Clark Five with Glad All Over, and Elvis with a splendidly mean Hound Dog.
