It may not have been on the playlist but P&P Singers brought joy to the world last night at their delightful carol concert in St Aldhelm’s Church.

Director Jean Chambers deftly conducted her talented choir through an eclectic mix of carols, from traditional favourites such as Good Kind Wenceslas and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, to lesser known carols including Wassail and Deo Gracias.

The singers’ rendition of the more modern Christmas song The Twelve Days before Christmas was an extremely funny highlight.

Jean’s meticulous arrangements allowed the talented choir to perform some enchanting medleys of traditional carols, and to perform creatively in rounds, parts and harmonies with varying lights and shades. Pianist Mary Potter single handedly (though she was surely using two hands at the piano) backed the choir with superb piano.

Audience participation was also expected, with a good old sing song to classics such as O Come All Ye Faithful.

In the womb of St. Aldhelm’s church, lit up with the twinkling lights of over 80 Christmas Trees, each decorated to represent countries around the globe, it was impossible not to feel enveloped by Christmas joy and peace.

Let’s all those of us who caught ourselves singing snippets the next day not shy away from stares at the bus top – crank it up and spread the cheer as far as you can like the Poole and Parkstone Singers last night.
