ACCORDING to the programme, this jazz theatre tour is for London Studio Centre students with “considerable physical skill, stamina and personal dedication.“ To sum up, it’s “not for the faint hearted.”

They’re not kidding. The London college’s four touring companies are the final rite of passage for every final year student – and the Jazz Dance Company tests their newly acquired skills to the limit.

The highlight of the first half was a quirky tap routine, where a French garcon was joined in an im-promptu tap dance by three ageing female customers. I’ve never seen a tap dance carried out by performers in wrinkled support stockings and wielding walking sticks but it proved a fantastic talking point.

The momentum then continued to build throughout the second half, which included the stunning Three Sisters. Lara-Louise Adams, Suzannah Bremner and Anna Dainton took the audience on an emotional journey through childhood, school, first love, heartbreak and death – it was a street dance routine with real heart.

But the best was yet to come with a stunning finale to a blood-stirring soundtrack of The Flower Duet, Kashmir and Pal-ladio. This was an incredibly complex routine which required athleticism and grace and needed to be performed in perfect unison.

A tough feat but the class of 2010 proved they were up to the task and the verdict of an appreciative audience was that they all deserve to pass with honours.
