The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra will be bringing Strictly Gershwin to life later this month.

Drawing on a blend of classical music and jazz that recreates the sounds of New York and Paris, American conductor David Charles Abell will be conjuring maximum delight from every note at the Bournemouth Pavilion.

Himself a New Yorker, George Gershwin used musical forms such as ragtime, blues and jazz to convey the vibrant, everyday lives of American people in a manner that would be acceptable to classical audiences.

Known for his shows, Gershwin’s Girl Crazy Overture comes packed tightly with all the energy and pizzazz of Broadway. It was a musical that produced overnight stardom with its charm and glamour.

Adding a dash of extra magic to the occasion, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra welcomes concert pianist Joanna MacGregor OBE, whose recordings and repertoire span music from the classical era right through to jazz.

This programme brings the style and elegance of 1920s American musicals right to your doorstep, with an evening that sparkles with quality, style and adventure.

Rhapsody in Blue opens with an impact that is memorable and instant as the famous opening clarinet glissando sets the scene for something special and a few surprises.

An American in Paris was Gershwin’s third orchestral work. It was inspired by two trips to the French capital and it evokes the sights and sounds of the bustling city, as seen by the fresh eyes of a tourist. Listen out for the car horns which help to create an urban feel.

Of course a visit to the American stage would not be complete without sampling the magic of Leonard Bernstein, whose 1944 musical On The Town includes several well-loved melodies.

This BSO concert promises to create a thrilling soundscape that will transform your evening and send your imagination whizzing across the decades.

Supported by Classic FM, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra will be performing Strictly Gershwin at the Pavilion on Saturday, May 24.
