Not a game about kittens, rainbows and fairy cakes, then.

No, it’s all about Daniel Garner, a grump with a morally questionable past who’d just about sorted his life out when, oh my, he stacks his car, popping his clogs and the Dutch footwear of his pretty (naturally) other half.

One horrifically-scripted cut-scene later and he’s made a deal with a demon to catch up with his lovely wife, in exchange for 7,000 souls harvested with fancy weaponry and a surly attitude.

It’s simple, detail-free first-person shooter stuff, nothing to push the envelope and not very pretty either but it’s priced accordingly.

But why you might stump for this over the similarly themed but superior DMC – the January title now old enough for the budget bin – is unclear and will depend on your appreciation of the original, decade-old Painkiller.
