FAITH Eckersall’s piece today about wedding gift lists was both interesting and amusing.

One was reminded of that old chestnut about the hideous pair of socks and matching tie which circulated around a family each Christmas only to land up, eventually, with their original donor.

On the subject of cash presents though, why not in these stringent times?

I was happy to respond with a cheque to a young couple who ended their wedding invitation with the following jingle: ‘If you were thinking of giving a gift, to help us on our way, a gift of cash towards our house, would really make our day’.
