For four years I have been supporting the victims of targeted vandalism and criminal harassment.

Following the interesting comments of your correspondents (reclaim the streets, Have Your Say, September 28), I have to say that the observations and comments in the report Stop the Rot by the Chief Inspector of Constabulary, Sir Denis O’Connor, were correct. Many of them I have made to the authorities over the years.

It’s the old runaround, isn't it? The authorities, whether they be police or council, need the co-operation of the community and the necessary social pressure people in their neighbourhoods can bring to bear on those intent on destroying civilised peace and quiet.

On the other hand, no one in a neighbourhood is going to stick their neck out unless they can be absolutely sure the authorities can, and have the will, to back them all the way.

For one reason or another that is missing, priorities slip and certain communities are “sliding into grief”.

The new proposals for an elected sheriff or police commissioner should help. It would give neighbourhoods someone account-able at the ballot box to go to, if things are not happening as they should.
