Your correspondent (Have Your Say August 30), suggests our national debt is “sustainable” – that greenie word again.

He thinks it is all a put up job.

He should know that the debt is around £800 billion and the interest alone is adding half a billion pounds a day to it.

That is like borrowing £1 million a day, every day back to before the birth of Christ. How “sustainable” is that?

What sort of legacy are we leaving to our grandchildren if we fail to tackle this mess left to us by Gordon Brown’s profligacy?
