I am disgusted with Poole leisure services’ proposal to increase Poole beach hut rents by 15 per cent over three years.

If this money was ringfenced to improve this aging stock of 550 beach huts it would be one thing, but it is not – it disappears into the black hole.

The condition of many beach huts is very poor.

They are badly maintained, causing unnecessary worry about being able to open the doors by many aged renters on low fixed incomes.

As for the statement in the council report: “Beach Huts are a luxury recreational item”, this suggests the author does not get out much to inspect the condition of the majority of units.

For many, not able to afford holidays, beach huts offer the chance to escape for fresh air.

Unfortunately this year during August, according to my own poll, most have used their huts twice.

The weather has been so bad, some have suffered water damage and infestation by mice.

If Borough of Poole were to appear to improve facilities and amenities, it would help justify a small increase.

I have been requesting showers on the promenade for some time now. Most beach hut owners located near taps regularly get flooded and disturbed by beach dwellers washing themselves and beach toys etc.

I also would welcome a visit by councillors to the toilet facilities at Branksome Chine any day – they are absolutely disgusting.

I urge councillors to reject this massive increase, especially in this close proximity to an election!
