Our TV channels are monopolised once again for football, with repeats and unscheduled substitutes the only alternative.

Your correspondent on June 29 reckons a quarter of people actually watch the football. Dare I suggest that the remainder of us, allow their TV licence to lapse for a month until normal service is resumed?

Well this is a possibility, but is there an answer to satisfy all?

One hears of red buttons, TV on demand, and all manner of hi-tech features of the latest technology, although there is one thing they don’t want you to know. As you can hardly fail to notice, there are hundreds of channels.

The problem is the regulators. So after some serious head banging of these jobsworths, there could be any number of new channels for the World Cup, Wimbledon, Grand Prix and anything else you like to name. Leave the classic channels to fend for themselves in the places they have earned.
