IT was a pleasant surprise to read an article in today’s Echo on Poole Pirates’ Stefan Nielsen and not to see him described as a charger.

A charger according to my Concise Oxford Dictionary is either a large flat dish or an officer’s horse.

I believe this reference to speedway riders emanated from Kelvin Tatum’s colour commentaries on Sky/BT Sports where he nominated several riders as hard chargers.

It was much loved by your former sports reporter Andy Mitchell who still uses it continually in the Speedway Star.

Speedway riders or racers are the bravest but they are not chargers.
