BRENT Coleman (July 2) rightly draws attention to the work of the Toilet Twinning organisation, whose headquarters are, in fact, based locally in Bournemouth (toilettwinning.org).

It is not only Rotary Clubs who are supporting this organisation – many Soroptimist clubs also recognise the importance and value of their work.

Soroptimist International (SI) of Bournemouth is a branch of Soroptimist International, which celebrates its centenary in 2021 and which was founded in California in 1921 by a Rotarian as an organisation for professional and business women throughout the world, separate from but with similar aims and objects to Rotary.

Toilet Twinning is a charity supported by many of the Soroptimist Clubs in the UK and, as part of the celebrations of its 80th anniversary in 2018, SI Bournemouth raised funds to twin over 85 toilets in many different countries in the developing world and, in doing so, enabled Bournemouth itself to become an official Toilet Twinned Town. We are proud that the mayor of Bournemouth, Cllr Susan Phillips, honoured us with her presence at our meeting last February to receive an official certificate from the Toilet Twinning Association which now hangs in the Mayor’s Parlour.
