CONGRATULATIONS on the VE commemorative souvenir Victory, which you and your Newsquest sister papers have just published. Any of your readers who have not yet bought a copy are missing a treat.
Like it or loathe it, our part of the country has always been at the sharp end of war – whether as militia in the Napoleonic Wars, or troops en transit to the Continent in WWI. It is deepgrained in our local history.
Whatever else Victory has achieved, it shows how very important our newspaper archives are for telling the story of our past. They are available with paywall from the British Newspaper Archives.
