AS I walk the promenade regularly throughout the year between Bournemouth and Sandbanks, I was interested in the article regarding cycling along it.
Cllr Hadley will not have heard of any “incidents” in June Why should he? The only ones we know about are in the occasional Echo letters.
There are often warm days, but the significance of July and August is that there are many children on the promenade during the school holidays.
I often witness beach hut users remonstrating with inconsiderate cyclists. To what end, one wonders?
The quoted “handful of irresponsible cyclists” is not only occasional but often pervasive. Following a meal at Branksome Chine last September, I suggested to my sister we could walk back to Bournemouth along the promenade. She enjoys walking but told me she would not repeat the experience along Bournemouth seafront. The reason? “Cyclists!”
“If I ruled the world” (or had any say as BCP councillors have), I would ban cycling along the promenade altogether, let alone at the height of the now short season.
Promenade: “A path for walking on ... especially by the seaside”. I’m au fait with Blackpool seafront, but a “linear cycleway” along Bournemouth/Poole seafront? Calamitous. Fatal!
