ENGLAND’S joy inspired by the soccer defeat of Germany brings to mind the times when an expression of pride in being English didn’t invoke a charge of being “racist” – a time when English schoolchildren were imbued with a feeling of pride in their country’s achievements and heritage rather than, as now, being burdened with a sense of vicarious guilt for the sins of their forefathers.
If England is to regain any of its former eminence there needs be encouragement of more stalwarts such as our soccer stars to work to this end, and fewer detractors standing on our doorstep shouting “stinking fish”.
