LYMINGTON-based Ian Williams is due to begin the final leg of his bid for a record-breaking fifth World Match Racing Tour title tomorrow.

Williams and the GAC Pindar team are set to go head-to-head with Taylor Canfield and his US One crew for overall victory at the Monsoon Cup in Johor, Malaysia.

Mathematically, any one of the sailors in the top five could win the tour with one and a half times the usual points on offer in the final round, which concludes on Saturday.

The 37-year-old Williams and his crew are six points ahead of Canfield and to guarantee honours, Williams and co must finish within a place of their rivals.

Mathieu Richard and Lunajets are also in with a shot but they would be heavily reliant on the results of Williams and Canfield.

Williams told sailing.gacpindar.com: “We are well aware of the various mathematical permutations but we haven’t taken them into account in our preparations.

“We are focusing on winning the regatta – if we do that then the title is ours.

“It feels like we have unfinished business here at the Monsoon Cup after our narrow loss in 2013, so we’ll be pushing hard to get revenge over Canfield and claim the title.”

Williams’s crew includes Gerry Mitchell (trimming), Mal Parker (main) and Chris Main (tactics) and Graeme Spence (bowman).
