CHERRIES academy youngster Ben Greenwood has been named in the Republic of Ireland under-19 squad.

The teenager continued his impressive rise having played for Fleet Spurs’s youth setup in Division One of the Combined Counties League last season

He has been picked in Tom Mohan’s group ahead of two international friendlies against Denmark in Sligo.

Greenwood’s selection comes off the back of being invited to train with the Ireland youngsters last month.

Head coach Mohan told the Ireland website: “There’ll be an honest approach from the players.

“It’s an opportunity for the players to impress. We’re looking forward to a good crowd in Sligo for the games.”

The fixtures are set to take place at the Showgrounds on Friday (7pm) before a second game between the nations on Monday (1pm).

Full-back Greenwood was snapped up by Cherries in the summer, having also been capped for England Schoolboys.

He has also had trials at Chelsea, Arsenal and Watford before joining the Dorset club.

Greenwood, who qualifies for Ireland through grandparents on his mother’s side, has already trained with Eddie Howe’s first-team squad since his arrival at Vitality Stadium.
