ANDREW Surman warned Cherries would have to improve markedly in order to earn FA Cup progress at the expense of Wigan.

The hosts trailed 2-0 at the break in Saturday's third-round clash after goals from Will Grigg and Nick Powell put the League One Latics in control.

And after Lys Mousset and a late Steve Cook effort rescued Cherries a replay, stand-in skipper Surman accepted there was plenty of room for improvement.

The midfielder told the Daily Echo: "It was disappointing individually and collectively, especially in the first half. We were a lot better in the second half but we need to try to put things right.

"Wigan came out of the traps quickly, they are on a good run at the moment and took their chances. We didn’t take ours in the first half but the lads showed great character to get back into it and score another late goal.

“We’re still in the cup. The manner of the performance is disappointing but we have got to take the positive that we are still in the cup and showed a lot of character to get back in it."

Surman was one of eight players to come into the side after the 2-2 draw at Brighton on New Year's Day.

The 31-year-old's return to the starting line-up was his first appearance since hurting his shoulder in the 4-0 Premier League defeat at Manchester City before Christmas.

Surman, who captained Cherries in last season's FA Cup exit at League One outfit Millwall, added: “You never know what is going to happen in the cup.

"We are going to have to play a lot better than we did when we play in the replay and if we can do that, hopefully, we can progress to the fourth round.

“Having said we weren’t great in the first half we still created a lot of chances, which is promising, we just couldn’t take them."

Half-time substitutes Jordon Ibe and Marc Pugh played key roles in the comeback, the pair providing assists for Mousset and Cook.

When asked what had sparked the improved performance in the second half, Surman said: “Individually and collectively we needed to be better – we needed to raise our game slightly.

“We never quite hit the standards in the first half. It was a case of everyone taking responsibility and showing a little bit more and I think we did that.

“We did really well and deserved to get back in the game against a team who are doing really well in League One."

Cherries have won six of their 22 away games against Wigan in all competitions. Eddie Howe's men can take heart from the fact they triumphed on their most recent trip to face the Latics, winning 3-1 in the Championship in February 2015.

Callum Wilson was twice on the scoresheet and Yann Kermorgant also netted.
