JASON Doyle celebrated his last-gasp call-up into Pirates’ team with a sensational match-winning performance at Birmingham in the Elite League last night.

The Aussie ace arrived in Britain earlier this month without a team.

But he was brought in as a temporary replacement for injured Darcy Ward before the Dorset club’s opening challenge at Eastbourne.

Then Pirates chief Matt Ford snapped up Doyle on a permanent basis as cover for unavailable Rafal Dobrucki.

And how Doyle has repaid Ford and Poole team manager Neil Middleditch’s faith.

He rocketed to three heat wins, including a match-clinching 5-1 with Pirates reserve Dennis Andersson over Daniel King and Dakota North in the penultimate race, to blast in a superb 12 paid 13 point tally at a packed Perry Barr Stadium.

It was one of Doyle’s top displays in a skull and crossbones race jacket and showed the 25-year-old clearly has the ability to keep his place in Poole’s team for the rest of the season.

Unfortunately, he didn’t get the chance to beat his previous best of 14 paid 16 at Belle Vue last year after Middleditch decided not to send him out for a sixth outing in heat 15 because of fatigue.

The match was already won by then, and it was fast-gating Doyle and Andersson, who grabbed his third successive double figure return for Pirates, who did much of the damage.

Doyle’s battling race 12 triumph summed up his and the Swede’s key involvement in Poole’s victory, which was ridden out in front of Sky Sports’ live TV cameras.

They went into the first corner on a Poole 5-1 after out-gating Ben Barker and Kevin Wolbert, but Andersson fell after his front wheel hit the curb.

Doyle came under tremendous pressure from both Brummies after the Swede pushed his bike off track to allow the race to continue.

The Aussie hung on to claim an important 3-3 which, along with Chris Holder and Renat Gafurov’s 5-1 over Ales Dryml and faller Krzysztof Kasprzak in race one, underpinned Poole’s success.

Looking back on heat 12, Doyle said: “I thought it was Dennis on the inside all race because I didn’t see him on the infield and was cruising on the last lap.

“Then I saw it was Ben and had to pick up my game.

“I should have gone deep on the last lap but, thankfully, still managed to get over the line first.”

Doyle added: “I started off the year in Aussie without a British team and didn’t know whether I should buy an airline ticket to come over.

“But I came thinking I could cover for injuries, paying for my own fare, and now I can hardly believe I’ve got two teams.

“I’m at Poole and Rye House (in the Premier League as a doubling up rider) and hope I can go from here and have a good season.”

Poole came fourth in Adam Skornicki's testimonial at Monmore Green on Sunday.
