CHRIS Holder will swap his race jacket for a spanner this weekend to help younger brother Jack continue to pursue his speedway dreams.

Pirates’ star lines up in the senior Australian Championship second round at Gillman in Adelaide tomorrow.

Poole Castle Cover’s spearhead goes into the meeting as favour-ite to pull off another triumph following his spectacular opening event win at Kurri Kurri.

But that won’t be the only championship action the 23-year-old will be involved in over the next few days.

He’s going to take time off racing his bike to help mechanic for Jack, who lines up in two Australian under-16 championship events aboard 125cc cut-down versions of senior 500cc machines, despite being only 14.

The first was due to take place today in the individual championship at Sidewinders, a track just five minutes away from Gillman.

Chris will also be on spanner duty on Sunday when Jack takes part in the national under-16 pairs. Jack’s eldest brother James, the 24-year-old who rode for Somerset in the Premier League last season, will also be on duty in the pits, alongside the siblings’ dad, Mick, who rode in Australia but not Britain.

The youngest member of the Holder clan warmed up for this weekend’s action by finishing third against mainly older boys in the Australian 350cc Championship at North Brisbane earlier this month.

Chris said: “Jack had only ridden 350 bikes four or five times before so to reach the final was a great effort. He made the start but Arthur Sissis got past him, then was second for two laps before ending up third.

“We were all helping him out, supporting my little brother.

“He’s great, he listens to everything we say and takes all our advice on board. He’s not silly. He’s still only learning, but I was proud of him in that meeting. He was awesome.”

Chris hopes Jack, who will also be accompanied at Sidewinders by his mum Karen, shines again on the cut-down versions of the senior 500cc bikes.

Asked if he could visualise the day when Jack would line up in the same Poole team, Chris said: “Yes. That would be cool.”

But, joking, Chris added: “We don’t know. Maybe he won’t want to ride for Pirates!

“Seriously, I’m pretty sure he wants to race speedway professionally. As long as he stays out of trouble and keeps learning, he’s going in the right direction.”

Poole duo Davey Watt and Darcy Ward travel to Gillman aiming to better their second and fifth place finishes at Kurri Kurri, respectively.
