Cherries’ wing commander Liam Feeney put the finishing touches to his new contract at Dean Court and then declared: “The sky’s the limit for us.”

Feeney yesterday followed team-mate Marvin Bartley by agreeing terms on an improved two-and-a-half-year deal with the club.

Crowd-pleaser Feeney has starred on the flanks this season as Eddie Howe’s charges have mounted a sustained promotion challenge.

The 23-year-old, an ever-present in both league and cup, has scored three times during a series of impressive displays as Cherries have remained in the hunt for honours.

Feeney told the Daily Echo: “I’m very happy to commit to the club. I’m delighted with the way things have gone and we are aiming for promotion this season.

“I was glad to be a part of what we achieved last season. I’ve only really known good times since I’ve been here. Although we were in a relegation dogfight last season, it was a success story because of the way it ended.

“We’ve kept up the momentum this season. Everything has gone really well and, hopefully, we can go on to achieve our ultimate aim.

“Things have taken shape and we’re still up there and still in with a great chance.”

Feeney, who arrived at Dean Court for a nominal fee from Conference outfit Salisbury in January 2009, played his part in helping Cherries beat the drop last season.

And despite an inauspicious start to his Cherries career, the popular Londoner has gone from strength to strength.

He said: “It’s hard when you move to a new club for the first few weeks.

“But I always knew that if I kept working hard, I would get my opportunities. Thankfully, I took them when they came along.”

Asked whether he feared his chance in the pro ranks had gone after a loan spell at Southend last season proved fruitless, Feeney replied: “I wouldn’t say I was worried I might not get another chance but it did affect my confidence.

“I think I was still suffering a bit when I first joined Bournemouth. I was a bit nervy here for the first few weeks but, once I had settled in, everything was fine and things have been great.”

Feeney, whose existing deal was due to expire in the summer, is now under contract with Cherries until at least the end of the 2011-2012 season.

Cherries boss Howe said: “Liam has been excellent ever since he’s been here. The contract extension is a reward for his performances and we hope Liam will continue with his good progress.”
