WIMBORNE boss Alex Browne turned on the radio in his car following this easy victory and heard he might be about to lose his job.

Browne, who has led Magpies to nine wins from their past 10 games, listened in as Gosport Borough boss Alex Pike admitted in an interview he was considering taking over the Cuthbury hot-seat.

Browne said it felt “surreal” his job was being discussed on live radio after indicating that no-one among the Magpies hierarchy had spoken to him about the situation regarding Pike over the past few days.

Up until Saturday evening, Browne only knew that Pike had been due to speak to Wimborne club officials and potential investors that morning.

It was understood Pike, who led Magpies to FA Vase glory in 1992, was going to be asked to consider a return to Cuthbury as director of football.

But Browne, the former Dorchester Town and Weymouth defender, said: “I was driving home after the game and turned on the radio and Alex was talking.

“I listened in and from what he said I gather he is making a decision on whether he’ll be the Wimborne Town manager on Monday.

“It probably wasn’t the best way I could find out, but that’s obviously happened and we’ll see what happens now.

“The radio guy said to Alex ‘are you going to be going back to Wimborne as director of football’ and he replied ‘if I’m going there, I’m going as manager’.

“One of the stewards at Wimborne told me they’d had a meeting on Saturday morning with the backers.

“It would have been nice for someone at the club to tell me, but I suppose that is too much to ask.

“Fair play to Alex, though. At least he has come out and said it as it is.

“It was strange hearing it on the radio, but he came out and said what the situation was.”

If Saturday’s triumph over Brockenhurst was Browne’s final game in charge, he would have bowed out on a high.

First-half strikes from Liam Green and Gareth Barnes did the damage and made it nine wins in 10 matches for Magpies, who also jumped up to second place in the Wessex Premier table.

Browne said: “If it was my last game, it would be surreal. There are no two ways about it.

“I have to speak to people at the club, but as far as I’m concerned we have done well and I’ll be there tomorrow when we’re away to Fareham unless told otherwise.”
