YOUNG boxing star Iain Weaver has returned from injury to brush aside two top American featherweights with polished displays.

The Ferndown-based southpaw, one of England’s top amateurs, sustained tendon damage to a wrist during a tournament in Finland last month.

But the 19-year-old has proved he is back to full fitness by beating American numbers three and two, Josh Bowles and Jerren Cochran, respectively.

Now Weaver, who has high hopes of claiming a medal at the London Olympics in 2012, is aiming to make it a notable triple success against American number one Kelvin Rivers.

Weaver was due to fight Rivers today in Des Moines, Iowa.

The teenager’s father, Jay, said: “Iain has been in the United States for three weeks training and fighting with the British podium squad.

“He beat Bowles 13-3 on points in Norfolk, Virginia, and followed that by stopping Cochran in two rounds in St Louis, Missouri.

“Iain put him down in the first and then broke his nose in the second. Cochran couldn’t come out for the third so they retired him on his stool.”

Rivers reached the last 16 of the World Championship in Milan where he lost to eventual runner-up Sergey Vodopiyanov, of Russia.

“Rivers has just beaten Cochran 21-11 in the American Golden Gloves event so it will be a tough test for Iain,” added Jay, whose ABA title-holding son fights out of the Golden Ring club in Southampton.
