CHERRIES new boy Anton Robinson last night agreed to take a sizeable financial hit to ensure his move to Dean Court went through at the 11th hour.

The Weymouth midfielder joined Salisbury City winger Liam Feeney in finalising personal terms on a permanent beat-the-transfer-deadline signing.

But while Feeney’s deal was relatively straightforward, Robinson was left to ponder the prospect of being left significantly out of pocket by his move.

The 22-year-old was asked to write off his past six weeks’ wages when a waiver arrived for him to sign just minutes before the window was due to close.

And although signing the document would leave Robinson facing short-term financial hardship, he agreed to ensure the paperwork went through on time.

Bournemouth-based Robinson arrives just days after Weymouth’s prospective new owners Colin Hill and Lee Power blocked his proposed move to Dean Court.

But after the two clubs renegotiated over the weekend, a deal was agreed for him to sign a two-and-a-half year contract for a nominal fee, the same terms as Feeney.

Cherries boss Eddie Howe welcomed his new arrivals when he said: “I always maintained I would only sign players I felt would improve the squad and Anton and Liam will certainly do that.

“Anton is a versatile and box-to-box central midfielder who gets around the pitch. He’s got a good engine and uses the ball well. He played on the left and the right as well for Weymouth and also at full-back so will be another excellent addition.

“Midfield is probably where we are at our strongest but when the chance came up to sign someone of Anton’s potential, we had to take it.

“I’ve watched Liam a few times and he always caught my eye. He is quick and versatile and can play a number of positions up front and wide. He is the right age and someone who I think can only improve in the coming years.

“Both permanent signings are the right age and will give us mobility, speed and energy, qualities which are so important in the modern game.”

Howe also bolstered his resources by extending Rhoys Wiggins’s loan spell from Crystal Palace until the end of the season. All three deals are subject to Football League clearance.

“Rhoys has come in and performed really well,” said Howe. “Prior to signing, he had played little football for eight weeks but you wouldn’t have known that from his performances.

“I’ve been delighted with how he’s integrated into the squad. He’s given us a great outlet going forward and has also defended very well.

“With Warren Cummings returning to fitness, it will be a good battle between the two for the left-back spot.”
