SWANAGE Cricket Club’s 1st XI signed off their Premier 2 Division campaign with a spirited performance at Days Park, pushing champions-elect Wimborne to the brink in a fiercely contested final fixture.
With heavy cloud cover overhead, captain Mark Stacey won a crucial toss and sent the visitors in to bat.
Wimborne made steady early progress, reaching 95–1 by the 19th over despite determined spells from Freddie Long and Coby Perry.
The match swung dramatically with the introduction of Matt Beard, whose superb display of late swing removed three key batters.
His spell included a stunning one-handed catch from Sid Nash, reducing Wimborne to 132–4 and lifting the home side’s momentum.
Wimborne, however, showed the depth befitting league leaders.
A measured rebuild carried them to 196–6, with further wickets claimed by Ben Hodder and Harry Long.
The visitors ultimately posted a strong 246–8 from their 50 overs, with Perry taking the final two wickets—an effort that secured him second place in the division’s wicket-taking standings, finishing with 33 at an impressive average of 16.
Swanage’s reply began shakily with two early wickets, but a brisk 35 from Mike Salmon—who ends the season as the club’s leading run-scorer with 340 at 31—kept hopes alive.
Regular wickets continued to hamper progress, leaving the hosts struggling at 136–8.
A spirited 60-run stand between Harry Long and Mark Stacey (pictured) revived the chase, and when Long departed, Beard joined Stacey to add a further 30 runs.
Their efforts brought Swanage within touching distance, but Beard’s dismissal left the side 20 runs short, with Stacey finishing unbeaten on a fluent 57.
Despite the narrow defeat, the result confirms a highly respectable fifth-place finish for Stacey’s side in a competitive division.
