POOLE Town are now seven points adrift of the Southern League Premier South play-off places, after suffering a 2-1 defeat at Hungerford Town.

A late consolation strike from Destiny Ojo was all Dolphins could muster, with a brace from Conor McDonagh enough for the hosts.

Matt Tubbs’s side sit ninth in the standings, having also lost to Chesham United at the weekend.

Hungerford made the early running at Bulpit Lane, Adulai Sambu’s effort cleared off the line by Declan Rose.

Dolphins worked their way into the contest, Tony Lee twice going close to breaking the deadlock, before strike partner Will Fletcher saw his bicycle kick attempt saved.

McDonagh almost broke the deadlock minutes into the second half, before Fletcher had a goal chalked off for offside.

McDonagh capitalised on a Poole error to put his side ahead on the hour mark.

Fletcher came close to levelling up, crashing a header off the crossbar, before being replaced by Ojo.

McDonagh then put the game to bed, before Ojo grabbed a goal back in stoppage time.

Poole have two home games in the next week, hosting Bracknell Town in the FA Trophy on Saturday before welcoming in-form Salisbury to BlackGold Stadium in the league on Tuesday night.

Dolphins: Evans, Rose, Whisken, Wright, Hutchinson, Lowes (Nippard, 84), Murray, Fogden (Samadi, 84), Coddington, Fletcher (Ojo, 76), Lee.

Unused subs: Bertrand, Butler (g/k).
