GARY O’Neil described as “very promising” Illia Zabarnyi’s performance against Manchester United, adding: “I’m excited to see more of him.”
The highly-rated 20-year-old has had to be patient in waiting for his chance since his big-money move from Dynamo Kyiv in January.
The centre-back made two appearances off the bench before being put into the starting XI for Cherries’ past two fixtures – defeats to Crystal Palace and Man Utd.
- Zabarnyi: First starts for Cherries a 'very good experience'
The 1-0 loss to the Red Devils on Saturday was the first time Zabarnyi has started a game at Vitality Stadium, and he showed his composure and quality in the middle of the defence, partnering Marcos Senesi.
Discussing the performance of the Ukraine international, boss O’Neil told the Daily Echo: “Similar to Brooksy (David Brooks) really, you wanted to put him in and you wanted to see, but it was obviously a relegation battle and the other defenders are in a flow and they know what it’s all about.
“I thought he was excellent (on Saturday), Zabarnyi. I thought he was really, really good.
“Defensively, very good, comfortable with the ball, physically dealt well with Man United’s pace so I’m excited to see more of him.
“I thought it was a very promising performance.”
Zabarnyi will hope for another chance when Cherries head to Everton on Sunday (4.30pm).
