CHERRIES have confirmed a new deal for development squad captain Ben Greenwood.

The 20-year-old’s new contract will see him remain at Vitality Stadium until at least the end of next season.

Formerly having trials with Chelsea, Watford, and Arsenal, defender Greenwood joined Cherries after impressing for Wessex League outfit Fleet Spurs during the 2018/19 season.

After loan spells in non-league with Wimborne Town, Poole Town, and Weymouth, the left-back established himself as a key figure in Alan Connell’s development squad side this season, captaining the young Cherries in their run to the Hampshire Senior Cup final.

Since signing a first professional deal in July 2021, Greenwood has been involved in numerous first-team training sessions, joining the senior side during pre-season camps abroad.

He made his first team debut in August under Scott Parker, playing the full game as Cherries beat Norwich City on penalties in the League Cup.

In February, Greenwood was also named on the bench for Cherries’ trip to Brighton in the Premier League.

Discussing his new deal, Greenwood told afcb.co.uk: “I’m buzzing to have a further year here at the club I’ve played for the past three or four years; I couldn’t be happier.

“It tops off a good season for me personally, too, so I’m buzzing.”

“I’m thankful for all of the opportunities I’ve been given, and I’ve definitely learnt a lot within that as well.

“That only stands me in good stead for next season and has meant I’ve really enjoyed this one.

“Being captain of the development squad, having a good year and then making my first-team debut at the start of the season, that’s always the aim.

He added: “Hopefully, I can kick on and there’s more to come next season; I’m really excited about it.

“I’ll keep myself in good shape while I’m off, come back and then see what happens in pre-season.”
