CHERRIES women ended the domination of Portsmouth in the Hampshire Senior Cup, becoming the first time in 14 years to knock them out of the county showpiece.

Molly Clark struck against her former club to provide the game’s only goal, sending Cherries into the second consecutive final – and ending Pompey’s run of 13 straight cups in a row.

Third-tier Pompey defeated Cherries, who currently ply their trade in the fourth rank of the women’s pyramid, in last year’s final.

Early on Ali Hall fired narrowly past the post for Pompey, before drawing a fine stop from Cherries goalkeeper Katie Scadding.

Hall had a third chance, her closest yet, smacking the bar with a header.

Shortly before the break Cherries would turn the contest on its head, former Pompey duo Katie James and Clark combining.

Midfielder James slipped in her attacker, with Clark making no mistake one-on-one with Hannah Haughton.

There were scares in the second period for Cherries.

Molly Gladwell went down in the area hoping for a Pompey penalty, but instead was booked for diving, whilst the crossbar denied the away side a second time, Nicole Barrett’s strike bouncing off the woodwork and away from danger.

Cherries held on to advance to the final, where they will face second-tier Southampton’s RTC side.
