LIVERPOOL star Trent Alexander-Arnold admitted that Cherries “probably wanted it more” in the Dorset side’s victory on Saturday.

Philip Billing’s first-half goal proved the difference at the Vitality Stadium, with Cherries overcoming Liverpool 1-0 for just their second win of 2023.

The visitors were left to rue a clutch of chances, Virgil van Dijk’s header in the opening exchanges cleared off the line by Jefferson Lerma before talismanic attacker Mo Salah shanked a penalty wide in the second period.

Reflecting on the result and performance, Alexander-Arnold told Liverpool’s website: “This is the time of the season when everyone knows what they are fighting for and obviously Bournemouth are in a relegation battle.

“They are fighting for survival. But every team in the league is fighting for something so it means a lot to get the three points.

“I think looking back on it now, they probably wanted it more than us and that is something that is unacceptable and we need to make sure this kind of thing doesn’t happen again.”

Aside from van Dijk’s attempt in the first 10 minutes, Liverpool also saw a goal chalked off for offside prior to Billing’s opener.

Cody Gakpo thought he had given his side the lead when he converted Darwin Nunez’s header, only for the goal to be correctly flagged for offside.

Asked where he felt things went wrong for the Reds, Alexander-Arnold replied: “I think it was quite early on, to be honest.

“We created chances, we had our chances to score [and] we never, obviously we had the goal disallowed.

“But we started on a bright foot and I think they just sucked the life out of the game and it was difficult for us to build momentum.

“They slowed the game down and executed their game plan and then go and score the goal.

“But it’s one of those – it was very avoidable, the goal, and it’s disappointing looking back on it.”
