The Cherries tactic copied by Real Madrid in the Champions League

Other teams took note, with European champions Real Madrid utilising the approach en route to the Champions League final.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men deployed the tactic against Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16, although the move did not come off for the European champions.

Whilst Cherries used the tactic at the start of the second-half, Sparta tried their luck immediately from the start of their second game in the Eredivisie, at home to AZ Alkmaar.

It took them just eight seconds to advance the ball up the pitch and convert, with Vito van Crooij sliding the ball past Hobie Verhulst in the AZ goal.

However, it was the away side who had the last laugh, battling back to eventually win 3-2 in Rotterdam.

After the game, Sparta’s Twitter account tagged Cherries’ social media in a post showcasing both goals, thanking them for the inspiration.

Former Manchester United manager and current Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal was in attendance at Het Kasteel, so there is an outside chance the Dutch national side could take the tactic to the World Cup this winter.
