HAMWORTHY United enjoyed a dream start to life in the Southern League, coming from behind to grab a last-gasp 2-1 win at Bideford.

This was Hammers' first ever encounter at step four of the non-league pyramid system, following promotion from Wessex Premier last term.

And they fell behind early on, Joseph Charles picking his spot in the eighth minute.

But Hamworthy grew in confidence, equalising on 25 minutes after a mix-up at the back. A backpass led to goalkeeper Adam Seedhouse-Evans having to concede a free-kick, as he handled the ball to prevent it crossing the line after hitting a divot.

The resulting set-piece was hammered home by Bailey Rowe from seven yards, despite 11 Bideford men packing the goal-line.

Goalkeeper Shane Murphy brilliantly tipped over from Lewis Wilson's close-range header, as the half ended level.

Cam Munn looked lively after the break, without reward as Rowe blazed over having been teed up.

Hammers substitute Max Wilcock then nodded into the path of Eddie Hodge, who fired wide.

Wilcock then found Curtis Young, who slotted in, only to be denied by an offside flag.

Hamworthy were on top and the pressure finally told at the death.

Lee Francis spun the ball out to Hodge, who cut back for substitute Aidan Shepherd to steer the ball inside the far post.

Hamworthy are back in league action tomorrow night, hosting AFC Totton at the County Ground (7.45pm).

Hammers: Murphy, Wright, Calverley (Clarke, 90), Taylor (Shepherd, 80), Walker, Rolls, Young, Francis, Rowe (Wilcock, 65), Munn, Hodge.
