INJURY ravaged Plymouth Gladiators offered little resistance as Pirates roared to a 62-28 win at Wimborne Road in the final group stage meeting of their Jubilee League campaign.

Three Pirates finished the evenings with paid maximums, as Richard Lawson, Danny King, and Steve Worrall were all undefeated by the opposition.

Gladiators travelled up the south coast with four guests and had to rely on rider replacement to make up a full septet.

Pirates number one Worrall started the evening in fine form, storming to a heat one win. His teammate Drew Kemp had a contrasting race, lagging behind at the back in a 3-3 split.

Plymouth reserve Ben Morley ended up in a tangle with the tapes in an unsatisfactory start to heat two, leaving him with a 15-metre penalty on the restart.

Despite starting behind teammates Harry McGurk, Morley battled back to take third – but Zach Cook and Nathan Ablitt looked comfortable as they took first and second respectively.

Skipper King won heat three at a canter, with most attention paid for the battle for second. There was contact between Pirates’ Ben Cook and Plymouth’s Jason Edwards, but the latter held on to claim two points.

In race four Lawson effectively crossed the finish before the following pack took the final bend, claiming a track personal record. Gladiators took consolation by taking second and third, with Broc Nicol and Morley keeping out Ablitt in fourth.

Pirates stretched their lead further with a 4-2 victory in heat five, with captain King responding to Lawson’s personal best by setting one of his own.

Heat six was another big win for Pirates, who took home a maximum via Worrall and Kemp. Both riders got off to a strong start, but Kemp survived a scare or two when his bike threatened to buck out of control.

With a commanding lead of 24-12 heading into the seventh heat, Pirates had control of the meeting.

That margin of victory remained the same as Lawson again strolled to another race win, with Gladiators Ruml and Lewis Kerr ensuring the spoils were shared.

Kemp took home his first race victory of the evening in heat eight, with Pirates teammate Ablitt snatching a point in third with Gladiators’ Edwards taking two points away from the race.

A tactical sub for the away side ahead of heat nine backfired, with Kerr becoming the second gladiator to get caught up in the tapes.

Rather than replace him with a reserve, Gladiators took another 15-metre penalty.

Pirates took full advantage of Kerr being trapped at the back, sailing into a 5-1 heat win via King in first and Ben Cook in second.

Worrall and Kemp combined again for another maximum in heat 10, with Lawson and Zach Cook matching their exploits in heat 11.

King made it four from four in heat 12, with the points split 3-3.

With Lawson and Worrall both on paid maximums, there was battle between the teammates in heat 13.

In the end it was Worrall who preserved his perfect record, with Lawson taking second and a paid maximum.

Brothers Ben and Zach Cook combined to add further gloss to the scoreline in heat 14, before Kemp ensured Plymouth would go home without a race win in the final heat of the evening.
