FLYING Richard Lawson expressed his thanks to Pirates team-mate Steve Worrall after he lent him his bike, during Wednesday’s 48-42 victory over Oxford.

With Lawson suffering mechanical issues and frantically trying to get them fixed – fellow heat leader Worrall stepped up to share his equipment.

The disruption was no worry to the Whitehaven-born star, who registered a whopping 16 paid 17 from six rides – including being used as a tactical substitute.

Explaining the situation, Lawson said: “After my second ride, the clutch stud snapped, so we couldn’t get the clutch basket replaced, so Stevie stepped up.

“I did a race on his until we got mine repaired. I did a race on his bike.”

He added: “We’ve got a fantastic team spirit in our team. Things like that go along way.

“I’ll be the first rider if Stevie ever needs a bike! We all mucked in and there was different riders helping out with my bike.

“I am so happy to be here, there’s a good atmosphere in the pits and among the fans.”

Victory over the Cheetahs kept Pirates chasing a memorable treble this season.

As well as being part of the Jubilee League final, they are set to compete in the SGB Championship play-offs as well as the semi-finals of the Knockout Cup.

“We want to clean up. We want it all and it’s looking good,” said Lawson.

“I wouldn’t say there is pressure on it but you know what is expected of you. I am doing my bit and everyone else is.

“We need to get on top of this slow start. Apart from that, everyone settled down and rode well and we eventually got the job done. We are into that final now.”

Pirates, who have already topped the South Group of the Jubilee League, host Plymouth in their final group contest on Wednesday.

A three-team final is set to be arranged between the group winners.
