STALWART Adam Smith believes competition for places can only be “healthy” at Cherries, with the right-back nonplussed by the addition of fellow defender Ryan Fredericks in his position.

Cherries have added free agents Joe Rothwell and Fredericks to their squad ahead of a return to the Premier League after a two-season absence.

After battling for a starting spot alongside Jack Stacey since 2019, Smith is unfazed by the premise of another teammate competing for the right-back berth.

Cherries’ record Premier League appearance holder, with 143 top-flight appearances in Red and Black, 31-year-old Smith has come to understand the need for large squads, also pointing out that the opportunity to utilise five substitutes next season requires deeper squads.

In an interview with afcb.co.uk, Smith stated: “It’s very healthy for the squad.

“I’ve seen it here every season, it’s football and it’s nothing personal.

“There is always someone waiting to replace you, that’s the nature of the game and that’s what keeps you on your toes.”

The former Tottenham man also shared his belief that the bigger Premier League teams will have an inherent advantage, thanks to the players they already possess.

“You need a big squad in this league and there are five substitutes next season as well.

“I think that gives the bigger clubs a slight advantage because they’ve got the biggest squads and some of their subs are just as good as starters.

“But it will give us more flexibility to change our formation and to freshen things up in games if we need to. Overall, it’s going to be better for the league.

“It’s great to be back in the Premier League because it’s where every player wants to play. I’ve had a taste of it and loved every minute. We can’t wait for the season to start.”
