FORMER Cherries centre-back Ryan Garry has led England’s under-18 side to a tournament win in Croatia.
Named head coach of the under-18s in September 2021, Garry led the Young Lions to a 3-2 victory over Austria in the opening game, before beating Wales 2-0 in their second match of the round-robin tournament.
England achieved the draw they required with hosts Croatia to secure first place, with the sides sharing a 0-0 draw.
Bizarrely, in a bid to boost the youngsters' adeptness at penalties, the two sides took part in a meaningless shoot-out that ended with the Young Lions winning 4-3.
Garry, who featured 86 times for Cherries between 2007 and 2011 after arriving from Arsenal, was forced to retire at just 27 after finding himself unable to recover from a persistent nerve-related problem in his lower leg.
His coaching career started with Cherries, as he retired to become a part of Lee Bradbury’s back-room staff as a first team coach and manager of the reserve side.
10 months later he had left the club following Paul Groves’ shake-up of the backroom staff, paving the way for his return to the Gunners.
At Arsenal, Garry spent three years as youth development phase coach, before moving on to work as the club’s under-19s coach.
A stint as interim academy manager followed, before he became the under-23s assistant manager in 2018.
