GARY Cahill heads the list of 14 players who have not been retained by Cherries at the end of the 2021-22 campaign.

Former Chelsea and England star Cahill arrived at Cherries on a free transfer last summer, following his exit from Crystal Palace.

And the experienced centre-back made a huge impact, instantly forging a partnership with Lloyd Kelly.

He played a key role in Cherries' storming start to the campaign, which saw them go a club-record 15 matches unbeaten at the start of the league season.

However, following a red card in the win at Barnsley on January 29, Cahill never regained his spot in the side, with Nat Phillips arriving two days later on loan from Liverpool.

The 36-year-old was regularly an unused substitute, until being usurped by Chris Mepham as the backup defender on the bench, meaning Cahill did not feature in the final six matchday squads of the season.

Cahill, who made 22 appearances during his time at Cherries, now leaves following the expiry of his contract.

He is one of seven first-team squad members who have left the club, with Cherries' six loanees also all departing at the end of their deals.

Cherries had options to make permanent the temporary stays of Leif Davis, Todd Cantwell and Morgan Rogers, but the club have opted against activating those clauses, with the trio now back at Leeds United, Norwich City and Manchester City respectively.

Phillips, Freddie Woodman and Ethan Laird have also returned to their respective parent clubs Liverpool, Newcastle United and Manchester United.

A final decision has not yet been made on Robbie Brady, who joined Cherries in October. The Republic of Ireland international made six appearances during an injury-ravaged season.

While his contract is set to expire next month, the club do have an option to extend it by a further year, with discussions ongoing.

Cherries have also released four further professionals, who spent much of the season out on loan.

Brennan Camp earlier this week revealed his departure from the club he first joined aged seven, having made his first-team debut earlier this campaign in the EFL Cup loss at Norwich City.

Bournemouth Echo:

Ryan Glover, who also debuted in that match at Carrow Road, has also been released, alongside Connor Kurran-Browne and Luke Nippard.

Three more youngsters have also exited Cherries in Owen Palmer, Aaron Roberts and Jack Seddon.

Of the players leaving, Cherries said in a statement: "The club would like to thank all those departing players for their efforts during their time at Vitality Stadium and wish them well for the future."

The contracts of Brooklyn Genesini, Sam Sherring and Jake Scrimshaw have all been extended, as have the scholarship deals of Noa Boutin, Marcus Daws and Ferdinand Okoh.
