MARK Ricketts’s first-half strike stunned Cherries as non-league Boreham Wood sealed a dramatic 1-0 FA Cup fourth-round victory at Vitality Stadium.

The Wood skipper, a trainee at Charlton when Scott Parker was in the first team, saw his goal in the 38th minute secure their place in the last 16 and set up a tie with Everton in the next round.

Cherries had chances in the second period through Philip Billing, with Jaidon Anthony’s strike ruled out for offside, as they were left embarrassed by the non-league outfit on their own turf.

The hosts made nine changes in total from the side which sealed a 1-0 victory over Barnsley in the Championship last time out.

Three January transfer window signings made their full debuts for the Dorset club, including goalkeeper Freddie Woodman and defenders James Hill and Nat Phillips.

Lewis Cook captained the Dorset club on the night. New recruits Siriki Dembele, Ethan Laird and Kieffer Moore, who were not in the squad, were unveiled by the club before kick-off.

National League Boreham Wood went into the fourth-round proper having not conceded a goal in the competition so far.

Luke Garrard’s side overcame Barnet, Eastleigh, St Albans and AFC Wimbledon to book their tie against Cherries.

There were 75 places between the teams in the footballing pyramid ahead of kick-off.

But a nervy moment from Woodman inside the opening two minutes almost gave the non-league outfit a golden chance.

The Cherries keeper’s misplaced pass was pounced on by an alert Josh Rees, who failed to get away his shot at goal.

Rees was in the thick of it in the early exchanges and was involved in a talking point with 11 minutes gone.

After Liverpool loanee Phillips let the ball get away from him in Cherries’ box, Rees went to ground under the challenge of the defender. Referee Graham Scott waved play on, despite protests from the visiting bench.

In what was a tame opening 30 minutes for Cherries, Phillips then needed treatment after a clash of heads saw him require a bandage.

On 38 minutes, the Wood took a deserved lead. After working the ball down the left through Jacob Mendy, Gavin Kilkenny’s clearance fell to captain Ricketts, whose low, driven effort from the edge of the box went in off the post to send the visiting fans delirious.

Parker showed no hesitation in changing things at the break for Cherries, taking off Cook and Ben Pearson in place of new recruit Todd Cantwell and Ryan Christie.

But it was Ricketts who almost had another for the visitors moments after the interval. The 37-year-old worked Woodman from a tight angle, forcing the Newcastle loanee to parry away.

Cherries attempted to respond. Christie’s left-foot delivery was met by a leaping Phillips, who glanced wide of the target.

With the hosts applying more pressure, Billing and Jack Stacey were brought on in place of Emiliano Marcondes and Nathan Moriah-Welsh.

And it was Billing who spurned a glorious chance 15 minutes from time.

The Dane ran through to meet Christie’s lofted pass but, one-on-one with keeper Taye Ashby-Hammond, he lifted the ball onto the roof of the net.

Boreham Wood then survived with 11 minutes left. Anthony turned home after the visiting stopper parried Billing’s header onto the post – the Dane was flagged offside.

Dominic Solanke then came off the bench and dragged wide after a cross from Leif Davis.

Despite Parker’s side piling men forward late on, the Wood held on to seal a famous victory.
