PIRATES promoter Danny Ford announced the signing of exciting British youngster Drew Kemp for 2022 and insisted he would be a “powerhouse” at reserve.

A three-time British under-19 champion, the talented 19-year-old arrives at Wimborne Road having ridden for Eastbourne and Edinburgh in the Championship last season – as well as for Ipswich in the top flight.

Kemp comes in alongside Nathan Ablitt to fill the reserve berths at Pirates, with the likes of Steve Worrall, Danny King, Ben Cook and Zach Cook confirmed in the main body of the team.

Speaking about Kemp’s arrival, Ford told the Daily Echo: “I’m delighted to welcome Drew to the Pirates. I didn’t actually see this opportunity coming up.

“Drew has been one of the most talked about up-and-comers within British Speedway.

“He comes in on just over a 3.50 average, which is an absolute steal. I believe at reserve, he will be a powerhouse and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see him in the main body of the team.

“It is a real statement signing, I believe.

“Drew has got a fair amount of experience now. Last year wasn’t necessarily the best year – we were expecting him to kick on a little bit more than he did.

“But I think he has got all the potential to turn Poole into a real favourite track for him.

“We’ve got a guy there with a lot of pedigree and a lot of talent. We really want to help and see him push on this year and progress in his career.”

Kemp first rode a speedway bike at the age of 13, following five years of motocross.

He has also already represented the likes of Mildenhall, Sheffield and Kent throughout his fledgling career and is set to line up for Wolverhampton in this season’s Premiership.

Asked about the excitement to have both Kemp and Ablitt at reserve, Ford added: “The potential we have between those two is sensational.

“Both young, British lads, I think the crowd will really get behind them both, which will be great. The potential for growth behind them is huge.

“I believe it will stand us in really good stead. As has been said many times before – reserves win you meetings.”

Pirates now have just one more space to announce before they complete their full one-to-seven for 2022.
