JORDAN Zemura and Zimbabwe will leave this year’s AFCON with their heads held high, by stunning more fancied Guinea in their final group game 2-1.
Zim went into the match already knowing that their tournament was over, thanks to the fact that group positions were based on head-to-head results.
As such, with Guinea and Senegal on four points and Malawi, who defeated Zim, on three, there was no possibility of finishing above fourth place.
However that did not prevent Zemura and co. from taking a 2-0 lead in the second-half, with captain Knowledge Musona nodding home at a corner before Kudakwashe Mahachi struck shortly before the break.
A second-half onslaught from Guinea saw Liverpool’s Naby Keita pull one back with a screamer from outside the box, but the Warriors held on to record a first win at the tournament since 2006.
Zemura himself came off with 15 minutes to go, with the wing-back adding two caps to his total for Zimbabwe during the competition.
