HAMWORTHY United’s FA Vase tie with Glebe had it all – a red card, penalty, and a comeback win courtesy of a late winner.

Fortunately for the Hammers the epic went in their favour, with Tim Sills’ men battling back from 2-0 down to overcome the Southern Counties Premier side.

Despite the away side going down to 10 men after an off the ball incident, Glebe stunned the hosts by taking a two-goal lead into the break.

Undeterred by the setback, a trio of second-half substitutions made by Sills helped to turn the game back into Hamworthy’s grasp.

Steve Devlin came on and converted a penalty to give life to Hammers’ dreams of Wembley, before fellow replacement Eddie Hodge scored an absolute screamer to restore parity.

The comeback was completed minutes before the final whistle when Jamie Beasley met Hodge’s cross at the back-post to send the Hammers through to the next round.

Speaking about having to come from behind against 10 men, manager Sills told the Daily Echo: “Sometimes ten men does provide different conundrums and problems.

“The other team then try and become as compact as possible, whereas maybe they would have been a little bit more expansive.

“We just didn’t deal with it in the first-half. Some of them were a little bit over-awed by it potentially.

“We just got into bad habits and things that we haven’t been doing.

“The first-half was just a struggle in terms of not moving the ball quickly enough, breaking them down and really getting into our flow, like we do.

“At the other end, we were also a little bit off it in terms of giving away opportunities which then gives them a lift. The two goals conceded were both very preventable, very poor goals.”

The introduction of Devlin, Hodge and former Cherries youngster Matty Neale proved a masterstroke, but Sills believed that any of his players could have made the difference.

“It was always going to be a big half time and a big call in terms of how to how to change it,” continued Sills.

“But that's why we've got the squad we've got. The fact is I would trust each and every one of them to come on and have an impact, and change a game - and the three that I did, luckily for me worked a treat.

“In terms of character, we’ve had to show that plenty of times since I’ve come in.

“That's something I will never question from the lads. That was what we asked for a half-time in terms of making sure they went out in the right mindset and still believing that it was possible.

“So yes, in terms of not being ahead and having to come from a couple of goals down, that is something that we haven't been used to at all.

“But then we know we can score goals. We know we obviously, can be solid at the back.

“So we have to trust that was going to be the case. Against 10 men, it was a case of just trying to wear them down and get control of the game which we did second-half.

“The second-half was pretty much all one-way traffic. And you know, in the end, I think we're probably just about got what we deserved, just based on our second 45.”

Hammers are now in the Fifth round draw, which will be hosted on Talksport, 3.15pm on Monday, January 17. The next round of Vase games will be played Saturday, February 12.
