IT'S been a whirlwind week in terms of goalkeepers at Wimborne Town, with a merry-go-round of transfers.

A dead-leg picked-up in the defeat to Poole last Saturday forced current number one Alex Cull to miss the loss at home to Truro on Tuesday, with manager James Stokoe left scrambling to find a goalkeeper five hours prior to kick-off.

Not for the first time this season, Tommy Scott answered the call, coming in as an emergency back-up for a third separate side.

Released in the summer by Southampton, Scott had stepped into the breach for both Hamworthy United and Poole Town in similar circumstances.

With the return of custodian Mark Childs at Poole, Scott left to train with Weymouth.

Detailing the last-minute panic, Stokoe told the Daily Echo: “It was tough, really, really tough.

“Cully’s (Alex Cull) taken a whack in the Poole game, got a dead leg from it.

“So, we were kind of hoping and praying that he would be okay.

“We got to 10 o'clock (that) morning, spoke to him and he just said that he can't do it - he physically can't play, he wouldn't be able to strike a ball, wouldn’t be able to dive on it.

“At that point, we’ve then got five hours to try sort a keeper out, which is difficult.

“Luckily we've got a good relationship with Weymouth. He's (Tommy Scott) been training with them.

“I went down to speak to Stocky (Brian Stock, Weymouth manager) and he said he could be available.

“We were really lucky with Poole Town to de-register him in time so that we could use him today.

“It was a really, really tough day for myself trying to sort something out.

“But you know, really thankful to those two clubs to be able to get something done overnight.”

Scott's appearance on Tuesday proved to be his last, with the former Yeovil goalkeeper being offered terms at Weymouth.

That paved the way for Gerard Benfield, a former Magpies shotstopper on the fringes at the Terras, to be allowed to leave - with the goalkeeper rejoining Wimborne on Friday evening.

With Benfield spotted at the New Cuthbury on Tuesday, rumours sprouted that he was set to return to east Dorset - with Stokoe originally coy.

"What we do going forward at the moment is, we're just concentrating on where we're trying to go points wise at the moment," continued Stokoe."

“If players become available, and they're interested in coming over to us, that's a chat that we'll have with them.

“I mean Gez (Gerard Benfield) is a brilliant keeper. He spent time at the club before, he comes down to watch when he's available to come and watch.

“So, yeah, it's a conversation I might have with him." After starting the week with no goalkeepers, Wimborne briefly had three on the books - and are now back down to two, after it was announced that Alex Cull was stepping away from football to follow other endeavours.
