PIRATES star Chris Holder admits he already has one hand on the Australian Championship trophy but insists he needs to remain "focused" to finish the job.

The Sydneysider won his fourth consecutive round at Newcastle yesterday, beating Troy Batchelor, Joe Screen and Jason Doyle in the final.

So he goes into tomorrow's deciding round at the Showground in his home city (start 7.30am) with a seemingly unassailable 12-point lead over Batchelor.

For Batchelor to snatch the title away, the Swindon new boy will need to win in Sydney and hope Holder can only languish 12th or lower.

That is an unlikely scenario, bearing in mind Holder's rampant form.

But the Poole Castle Cover heat leader said: "It's not over yet. Anything can happen.

"I have to focus on the last round, and there is still some prize money to be won.

"It is pride. I want to go out and win them all. That is what I want to do."

The champion-elect added: "It has been awesome to win all four rounds. I can't believe it.

"It's just been going really well for me. I have been making good starts and getting race wins. I just managed to make a great start in the final at Newcastle off gate one. It was perfect.

"I'm not so much surprised I have won four rounds, but really happy that I'm doing so good.

"I've raced all the boys before and know I have beaten them, and I know they have also beaten me. But I have put in a lot of work and really want to win my first Aussie senior title."

Holder has already carried off three successive national under-21 crowns, and will be going for a fourth at Mildura on January 26. It is the senior crown he harbours most, though, after finishing seventh overall last year.

He said: "It would mean so much to me if I won it. It will be up there - one of the best things I have done.

"I have come so close. Now I'm really looking forward to Friday when I hope I can have a good night."

Holder has won 20 out of 24 championship races and was only beaten by Fredrik Lindgren in Newcastle on his way to 14 points.

Astonishingly, Lindgren has defeated Holder three times in the series despite the Swede currently lying only fourth in the overall standings, with Screen and Doyle the only other riders to lower Holder's colours.

Looking ahead to the Sydney meeting, Holder said: "I've only ridden there once, in last year's Aussie championship round when I won the B final.

"It is not like a normal speedway track. It's just a big stadium with a 440-to-450 metres dirt track on the outside. It is a really odd shape around a baseball pitch. It is not really speedway, but I'll do my best to finish the championship on a high."
