BOSS Scott Parker admitted Cherries’ swoop for goalkeeper Orjan Nyland came in quick fashion but added: “I think healthy competition in that position is key.”

Following the departure of Asmir Begovic to Everton last month, the Dorset club were left with just two senior goalkeepers in Will Dennis and Mark Travers.

But Norway international Nyland agreed a deal until the end of the season to bolster the goalkeeping department.

The 30-year-old, who has taken the number one squad number at Vitality Stadium, has been on the bench for Cherries in Championship clashes against Birmingham and Blackpool.

He could feature when Scott Parker’s side make the trip to his former club Norwich City in the Carabao Cup second round tomorrow (7pm).

Nyland provided cover for Tim Krul as the Canaries were promoted from the Championship last season.

Asked about the deal for the keeper coming about quickly, Parker told the Daily Echo: “Yeah, it did. It was an area we needed to improve and certainly strengthen.

“And also give competition as well. I think we’ve done that.

“Travers has done very, very well and I’ve seen him improve.

“Certainly game by game I’ve seen big improvements, so that’s very, very pleasing. I think healthy competition in that position is key. Hopefully Nyland will give us that.”

Cherries have been heavily linked with a loan deal for Newcastle’s Freddie Woodman this summer, with the Daily Echo understanding a deal was in place to bring him to Vitality Stadium.

But due to Martin Dubravka’s injury and Karl Darlow’s positive COVID-19 case, Woodman has started the Magpies’ opening two Premier League games.

Quizzed on whether Cherries were after another keeper, Parker replied: “We’re looking constantly.

“If opportunities come in any position we feel that will strengthen us, we feel that we need, we feel will add a dynamic which we’re short on, then definitely all areas we are looking at.

“It isn’t just one position at this present moment in time, we’re comfortable in a lot of positions and we’re weak in some.

“But I think every position is one which in a transfer window you need to be open to and we certainly are that.”
