BOSS Tom Killick stated there was “no excuse” after his side squandered multiple chances in their eventual defeat to promotion rivals Farnborough.

Dolphins threw away an early lead to succumb to a 3-1 loss, after they were unable to maintain their control as the game progressed.

Speaking after the match to the Daily Echo, Killick said: “There’s no excuse to let an opportunity like that slip away when you’ve been so superior.

“We just had it all our own way (in the first half). It was so easy for us, and they were so poor physically, in terms of defending against us and tracking runners.

“It’s just a huge missed opportunity. They were all at sea in the first half. Attacking wise – always bright, I’m not criticising that.

“But they were all at sea defensively. We need to recognise that you’re not going to have it all your own way, so when you got that opportunity, you have to take advantage of it.”

Dolphins dominated the opening exchanges and carved open their guests on multiple occasions, going closest via Tony Lee.

Lee was sent one-one-one with Boro shot-stopper Dante Baptiste, but after rounding the goalkeeper, lost his balance with an open goal in front of him.

The striker would make amends however, stretching his scoring streak to start this season to five goals in three games. Luke Burbidge whipped in a free-kick on to the head of Lee, who duly sent a looping header over Baptiste.

“I feel that we’ve just got complacent,” said Killick.

“We’ve gone a goal up – I think we thought we would have just chance after chance, but football’s not like that. They’ve got some good players, and were bound to improve, and they did improve.”

Farnborough improved straight after Poole’s goal, and after 15 minutes had restored parity following a mazy run and simple finish by Reggie Young.

Young then turned provider to tee up Jordan Rose, whose strike was helped past Mark Childs by a strong deflection.

In the second half whilst Poole generated little of note, the away side effectively sealed the game in the 67th minute through substitute Elijah Simpson.

Again Young was the orchestrator, beating Will Spetch to a high loose ball and feeding Simpson, who duly dispatched his shot between Childs’s legs.

“We just lost to a team that, without being disrespectful, we should have won the game convincingly, in my view,” stated Killick.

“We knew they had good attacking players, but we also knew that they were going to struggle to defend against us.

“That’s exactly how it panned out – they looked good going forward, but every time they turned possession over, they didn’t really want to run back.

"By the end of the game we had three very clear one-one-one opportunities, and we’ve missed all three of them. The goal came from a set-play, despite all of the superiority that we had.”

Poole fell to 19th in the Southern League Premier South rankings, ahead of their bank holiday weekend double header away to Harrow Borough and home to Dorchester Town.
