CHERRIES have "set their sights" on a move for Southampton striker Michael Obafemi, according to a report by Football Insider.

Obafemi, 21, is understood to have just one year remaining on his contract at St Mary's.

The Republic of Ireland international debuted for Saints' first team in January 2018, coming off the bench in a 1-1 Premier League draw with Tottenham.

He has now made 38 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals.

Obafemi was due to head out on loan to Swansea City in January, only for an injury to scupper the deal.

He returned to feature in the closing weeks of the campaign for Saints and has been heavily involved during pre-season for Ralph Hasenhuttl's squad.

Saints have seen a rejig to their frontline in recent weeks, following the departure of Danny Ings.

Adam Armstrong and Armando Broja both arrived at St Mary's, giving Obafemi even more competition for places with the likes of Che Adams and former Cherries loanee Shane Long also pushing for a starting berth.

The report from Football Insider claims Cherries are pursuing a permanent deal for Obafemi, after a move to fellow Championship club Blackburn Rovers fell down this week.

Discussing Obafemi's uncertain future this week, Hasenhuttl said: “The latest with Obafemi is that he is our player and he is a young player with potential.

“So far, he has had a few good games in the Premier League but has never has a really consistent season. We have a lot of alternatives in his position and this does not make it any easier for him to play.”

He reiterated: “We need every player this season. If he stays he must fight hard for his position.

“We want him to be in and around the group but if we see that he is not in the race for starting then we will have to discuss what is the best thing for him.

“I don't want to make the mistake of letting players go. I don't want to let any players go if we think that we have got a use for them.”

Cherries are in desperate need of a striker. After letting Sam Surridge leave to join Stoke City, Dominic Solanke is the only recognised senior centre-forward in Scott Parker's squad, with teenager Christian Saydee currently providing the backup option.

Football Insider also yesterday reported Cherries are in talks with Tottenham to re-sign Cameron Carter-Vickers, who spent last season on loan at Vitality Stadium.

However, the Daily Echo understands that to not be the case at present.
