CHERRIES have emerged as "leading contenders" to sign Ipswich Town midfielder Flynn Downes, according to a report in the East Anglian Daily Times.

Downes, 22, has been with the Tractor Boys for the past 15 years, coming up through their academy.

He has gone on to make 100 first-team appearances for Ipswich, including 25 last season.

Downes also spent time out on loan at Luton Town during the 2017-18 campaign.

But, according to the Daily Times, the Brentwood-born ace is keen for a new challenge, with Ipswich boss Paul Cook believed to have now made Downes join the club's under-23s for pre-season training after he expressed his desire to leave.

Fellow Championship sides Peterborough and Barnsley are also said to be interested in Downes, but Cherries are reportedly leading the race.

Crystal Palace were linked with a move for England under-20 international Downes last summer, but their bids were rejected.

Cherries have made one signing so far this summer, snapping up Emiliano Marcondes on a free transfer following his departure from Brentford.
