NEWCASTLE United have “edged in front” of Cherries in the hunt for Cameron Carter-Vickers’s services, according to reports in America.

SBI Soccer claim the Tyneside club are leading the race for the 23-year-old, with Fulham and Cardiff also reportedly making contact with Tottenham about the United States international.

Carter-Vickers impressed during his season-long loan spell at Cherries from Spurs last season, playing a key role in the side reaching the play-offs.

After an injury-hit first few months on the south coast, the defender shone under Jonathan Woodgate.

After the former Middlesbrough boss took the reins in February, Carter-Vickers did not miss a minute of action for Cherries.

But after last month’s play-off defeat at Brentford, the defender now heads back to the capital having scored one goal from his 26 appearances at Cherries, his sixth loan spell away from Spurs.

Carter-Vickers finished in third place in the Daily Echo-Micky Cave supporters' player of the season vote. He has one year left on his contract with Tottenham.

Asked by the Daily Echo in March whether Cherries was somewhere he would like to stay for the long-term, Carter-Vickers replied: “Yeah, I think, that’s a question that I’ll have to just kind of (go) deeper into at the end of the season.

“But it’s definitely something that I’m open to and something that I’d definitely be up for come the end of the season.”
