JONATHAN Woodgate insisted Cherries had a plan to keep quiet hotshot Ivan Toney, as the head coach looks to mastermind the Dorset outfit’s route to the Championship play-off final.
Despite notching 31 league goals this campaign, former Peterborough forward Toney endured a quiet evening at Vitality Stadium on Monday. Cherries went on to seal a 1-0 victory following Arnaut Danjuma’s 55th-minute winner – the Dutchman coolly capping off a slick counter-attack.
“It’s part of the plan, to keep Ivan Toney quiet because he is a very good striker, one of the best strikers in the league,” said Woodgate.
“We had to contain him at times, we had to be compact and hit them on the counter-attack.”
Toney was largely contained thanks to an impressive display at centre-back from Cherries’ loanee Cameron Carter-Vickers.
Asked whether he was disappointed with Toney, or whether the Brentford side as a whole did not provide him with chances, Bees boss Thomas Frank replied: “I think Ivan has been the best player in the Championship this season.
"I think he’s done well.
“You know, that’s a good question, I hadn’t thought about that.
“No, I think it was fine. Overall we can do better as a team.”
